4th edition uses miniatures and maps, while our old school game had a more “radio theatre” approach to combat. Hopefully this recording will make sense for people who weren’t at the table.

The group gets up to speed with 4e and discusses how we’ll get to the battle we know lies ahead. After looking around town, and making a new ally the party heads out into the wilderness to deal with the Kobold menace.

The conclusion to our second old school D&D game session!

A panicked retreat from the rampaging cavemen leads the party to an encounter with an old associate from their last expedition to the Ancient Academy.

Next week’s episode will be a break from Classic D&D while we give the newest edition a try with our first game of 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons.

The party regroups after narrowly escaping defeat at the hands of the undead. After reflecting on their losses they choose to continue exploring the Ancient Academy and encounter another group of goblins. Learning that these creatures have prisoners in the dungeon the players must decide what to do with this information. Should they try and release them? Is the enemy of your enemy your friend?

We kick off our second old school game night with the character’s heading back to the dungeon below the monastery. For “Return to the Ancient Academy” the group was one player (and one character down), and a few of the hired men decided not to press their luck and retire with their hard earned coins from the first expedition. Fortunately a couple of new men could be found who were fool-hardy enough to join the group.

Things quickly become dire for the group when they decide to investigate the sparkling object at the bottom of the putrid pool in the sunken room.

The conclusion to our first D&D session for Expedition to the Ancient Academy.

The party and their dwarven allies face off against the goblins, and the adventurers encounter their most dangerous foe yet. In true old school dungeons & dragons style this episode sees player’s characters down to 0 hit points, and facing save-or-die peril.

Continuing our old school game of D&D titled “Expedition to the Ancient Academy”, the party finds the door to an old crypt. Will they brave enough, or foolish enough, to open the door and explore inside? Will all those who enter, leave again?

The group is really into the spirit of the game at this point, and people seem well immersed in the fictional world of the dungeon beneath the old monastery.

The next part in our series of recordings from our “Expedition to the Ancient Academy” game of D&D.

In Part 2 the party begins to explore the dungeon and encounters animated mining tools, a group of goblins, a snake, and a deadly encounter in the desecrated temple.

The group realizes the importance of light in the dungeon and everyone is glad they brought a good supply of lantern oil and torches with them!
