Old School One Page Dungeon

ancient-academyNow that everyone has submitted their entries to the one-page dungeon contest, I thought I’d share my entry here as well.

It’s the dungeon for the “Expedition to the Ancient Academy” actual play recordings I’ve been posting on the podcast!

All the monsters were placed by rolling on the random tables in the Moldvay basic D&D book. Some of the earlier room descriptions were borrowed from other dungeons, but I’ve updated them to be original content for this version.

There are still some allusions to other dungeons (Frog Gods = Arneson, Monastery = B5: Horror on the Hill, Excavating Tools = Warlock of Firetop Mountain) because part of the point of this was to make reference to old school dungeons – hence the title “Ancient Academy”.

All the graphics, including the hatch pattern, were done in Adobe Illustrator. I learned a lot about doing dungeon maps and might post some tutorials on the techniques I used. I might also release the hatch pattern and the icons as a font set as well if people are interested.

I’d love to see a tutorial on how you made your map. It’s very nice.

Hi. Any word on when you may release the fonts and/or release a tutorial on how to create similar maps to yours? I really like the design. It looks and feels old school. :)

    Thanks

Yeah man let’s get some fonts or a tutorial, that would rule. Your dungeon rocks…

Started running my 12-year-old daughter through this Friday evening. She was playing two PCs and the party got wore down real bad by the skeletons in the crypts. During the retreat out they ran into some wandering dwarves and blew the reaction roll terribly. The dwarves killed one PC and knocked the other out. I ruled that they dragged the unconscious party members to the surface, took their treasure, and left them.

So now, without a copper to their names, they’ve got a reason to return to the Ancient Academy in search of more loot.

    Lovin’ it so far.

That is so cool! Thanks so much for sharing that – you’ve made my morning. :D

Ah, was just thinking about it again and remembered that they did find the spellbook in the library/study room. They don’t know that it’s a spellbook and don’t have a magic-user in the party, but they could probably sell that for some cash if they figure out what it is.

Anyway, off to a great start and we’re really liking it.

Have you listened to any of the recordings of our group going through this dungeon? It’s really interesting hearing the similarities and differences. My group also ran from the Skeletons, but formed a temporary alliance with the Dwarves.

I haven’t listened yet, though a link to the podcasts is how I arrived here and realized that it was for the Ancient Academy. I hope to listen to them within the next few days.

TRUE STORY: I was looking for a quick adventure for my daughter to solo play with me last Friday when her brother was out camping. I scrolled through the One Page Dungeon Contest PDF and picked the Ancient Academy (and noted that touching the altar in area 14 would teleport them to the Pac-Man type one page dungeon as a sort of sub-level, LOL).

That morning I was thinking about how I used to record some of our sessions on cassette BITD and wished that I still had those tapes. Which reminded me that I had bookmarked someone’s podcasts of session recordings. I found the link and arrived here only to realize it was for the VERY SAME Ancient Academy that I was preparing to send my daughter through that evening.

    Crazy.
