@Jay: Thanks very much! :)

The shoulder dislocation, contortion, etc would fall under the "Escape Artist" skill, so d4 at first level going up by 1-step each 2 levels until it's d12 (versus 4) at 9th level.

Harry Houdini is definitely the inspiration for the Magician with the "Escape Artist, Find/Remove Traps, Pick Locks, Sleight of Hand" option. :)

Egg Shen from Big Trouble in Little China is the inspiration for the more "traditional" Magician with magic resistance. Did you know that movie was originally written as a Western, and then later modernized before filming? Jack Burton had his *horse* stolen in the original script.

The Talisman Magic option is so that it lets you play a wand or staff type magic user. Maybe something like Harry Potter, or Shaman from Alpha Flight.

Sorry, I think I missed reading escape artist in your post. Looks like you got the slight of hand stuff covered. In keeping with Houdini though maybe think of a few acrobatic skills (thinking shoulder dislocation, contortion, etc.)

Great idea BTW on the Western D&D, I'm loving these posts!

I suspect a magician would have more in common with an illusionist and a rogue than a straight-up magic user. I'm thinking Harry Houdini is your template--something more in the line of distraction and escape artist skills.

The AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide has a section on converting between D&D and Boot Hill. They call that "Sixguns & Sorcery". :)
